My top five rap albums of the Fall - Juicy J, Danny Brown, Earl Sweatshirt, Big Sean, and Clear Soul Forces
I listen to a lot of rap.
Thankfully there's a ton of amazing rap music being made in 2013.
For examples I will give these five albums that came out this year and a video from each.
5) Big Sean - Hall of Fame
10 2 10 is a disturbing track off hall of fame. Because Sean sings/raps the chorus a little bit off key it gives a chilling feeling and - the video fits the mood. This song shows the growth of Sean over 2011's Finally Famous. Is the song racist? I don't think so it mostly targets the "hardworking" stereotype.
4) Juicy J - Stay Trippy
All I blow is loud is a good example of why this album is so good. One liners, southern rap stylings, ignorance. "Homey pass the weed, let's get super high, I smoke the shit that make R Kelly think that he could fly"
3) Clear Soul Forces - Gold PP7s
I love this crew - is it crazy that three of these groups are repping Detroit! Clear Soul Forces is definitely the most underground sounding of the five I've chosen so it's no shock they end up in the two spot. I am digging the sample based beats that still don't slack on drums and the group format which keeps the rhymes and cadences from getting stale.
2) Danny Brown - Old
This album has been getting some amazing reviews - and for good reason. This track "ODB" didn't clear a sample and isn't on the album. But it should be. Absolutely channels MF Doom here and Danny is a perfect fit with his bizarre sounding voice and image. I love the sped up/slowed down beat it channels doom's (insert track name). It's kind of wild how rap is going back to this style with odd future and danny, also homeboy sandman should be an honorable mention.
1) Earl Sweatshirt - Doris
I can't get enough of this album. This track is also more of a standout - unlike the other videos that were made for the projects I chose to feature here so it's an easy number one choice. Earl is so dark on this album but he doesn't marinate and start to stink like fellow Odd Future member Tyler. Highly conceptual videos make sense for these guys and can't wait to see what the next one they release will be!
