Tips' Picks - Week of 5/20 NYC - Moroder, Freedia, Onra, Drumma Boy
#WISEUP Family!
On Mondays I will be listing some of the weekly events that have me excited to be living in the best city on Earth!
Here are my picks for the week of 5.20 - 5.24:
Monday 5.20: Giorgio Moroder
5.20 - Output - 21+ Sold Out
With the recent recognition as a result of his prominent place on the latest studio effort from Daft Punk, seeing this living legend and disco pioneer is now harder than ever! Seriously Output will be transformed into a mecca of dance music with yet ANOTHER dance music hall of famer Francois K on the bill.
Tuesday 5.21: Onra
Le Poisson Rouge - 10pm - $15
This Parisian producer is extremely diverse, mixing hip hop samples Shadow or Dilla might have chosen side by side with house-sounding analog synth work and drum machines. Lots of my favorite of his tracks are collaborations so it will be interesting to see who he brings with him on tour.
Wednesday 5.22: (Click "Read More" to see my pick for Wednesday and Thursday this week)
Wednesday 5.22: Mannie Fresh, Boi-1da, Young Chop, Bangladesh, Drumma Boy
8PM, Knitting Factory Brooklyn, $15, 21+
You will hear 2 Chainz if you go to this show. I recommend drinking before hand. I recommend going because it is definitely a lot of incredible rap producers, but none that I know that can DJ. But you might be surprised!
Thursday 5.23: RBMA Presents Big Freedia, Afrika Bambaataa, Drop the Lime, Salva, DJ Assault, Egyptian Lover - United States of Bass (Sold Out)
Santos Party House - 21+ - Sold Out
It's really wild to me how cheap all of the Red Bull shows are - it's almost like they would be free but they just want people to buy tickets that are actually motivated to attend and will have fun.
I really dig all of the different genres of bass music that are represented on the bill - everything from Ghettotech from DJ assault to Bounce from Freedia, Rockabilly from Drop the Lime and Dubstep from Salva, Old School Electro/Hip Hop from Egyptian Lover and Hip Hop from Afrika Bambaataa.
I saw Egyptian Lover in Detroit and he was amazing. He DJ's with a mic, an 808 and two turntables: my ideal setup.
Speaking of DEMF - I'll be heading towards Michigan Friday. I'll have my festival preview up for you Wednesday so you can get fully ready for Memorial Day weekend antics!
